My orchids are getting white stains, what to do?

Posted by admin

My orchids collection is vast. they used to have lots of flowers. When the rains came, there were very few flowers, and those that came out lived only shortly. Now, I see some white spots on the leaves, and even the blooms dry and the flowering is aborted. It has been sunny, and I expected the blooms!
My orchids are out in the sun. The white spots look like scales. No, they have not been over-watered because I have not changed the routine.

Your description is a little vague. White spots on the leaves sounds like scale. Sunburn can start out as white areas on leaves. Are your plants in your home or a greenhouse? Have you changed when you water, how much you water or your fertilizer? If you could post some pictures it will be easier to make a diagnosis.

Pruning leaves and pseudo bulbs on orchids?

Posted by admin

I have a Chocolate Oncidium orchid that I’ve grown for 6+ years. The leaves are getting quite bushy. Should I, can I prune them without hurting the plant? Any other advice about mature orchids? It hasn’t flowered yet this season as it usually does.

No – it sounds like you have a healthy specimen. More light will help produce flowers.

There is never a need to ‘prune’ the leaves as they will mature and fall off on their own.

If the plant is not flowering and overcrowded, wait until you see the beginning of new root growth and then divide it.

where can i buy edible orchids?

Posted by admin

i want to buy edible orchids to give as a gift to someone because i know she will love it. i know edible orchids exist because at one of my old jobs we used them in the salad for show and eating if u chose to. does anyone have any idea where i can buy them ready-to-eat or just for show, either one?

I have no idea, that would be so awsome to eat an orchid though. I wonder what is tastes like. You can also get a vine called nasturathim (sp?) and its edible, and has yellow, red, and orange flowers. And lupines are edible too.

How can you pin orchids to long hair?

Posted by admin

The hair is going to be worn down, it’s shoulder length, and wavy. I am going to pin 3 orchids to compliment the look. I am thinking of placing them on the side where she parts her hair. What type of pins would I need? Would simple bobby pins hold the orchids in place?
I am going to ask the florist to prep them accordingly.

bobby pins for sure! they are tiny but work VERY good. And since they are smell it will be less noticeable.

Can orchids be used as cut flowers?

Posted by admin

Can you use orchids as cut flower arrangments and whais the best way to preserve tham?

Yes; florists often use orchids in flower arrangements. Get vials that can be placed on the cut end of the orchid to keep it hydrated; if you can place it into a cool area at night, it will last longer.

How do I get rid of bull ants in my hanging orchids?

Posted by admin

Ok, I thought hanging them out on my fence was better than having them inside where my cats were eating them. To no surprise they recovered nicely. Till one day I went out to water them and swarms of huge ants came crawling out. Help!! Does anyone know how I can get rid of them without hurting my orchids?

Water them deeply or soak in a bucket every day for a week. Ants will consider this a "hostile" environment and move on!!

Good Luck!!
