How to care for an orchid in water?

I got an orchid submerged in water in a vase for Valentines. Very beautiful…but I’m not sure how to care for it. How long should it live? I’m assuming I don’t need to do much for it since it’s in water….but I just want to check. I don’t want to kill it!!
Most definitely take it out of the water, it will rot and die otherwise. Sounds like your friend got that plant from a florist, which generally have no experience in the care of orchids. Is it an actual plant with roots and all or is it just the cut flower? I have never heard of an orchid being sold this way if it is a whole plant. I am guessing it is a Phalaenopsis (they are the most common) so it needs to go into a bark mixture. You can go to your local nursery and pick up a small bag. Pot it in a small pot and gently stuff the bark mix around the roots. As far as watering we recommend the soaking method. Place the plant in your sink or a larger pot without a hole in the bottom and fill with water to the level of the pot. Soak for about 15 minutes once a week. The flowers will fall of eventually in a couple weeks, but sometimes they fade faster when you re-pot when it is in bloom. If you don’t remove it from the water then the whole plant will die so I would say it is worth losing the flowers. An east window is generally best. Keep up your routine care and it will bloom again for you soon.

How do you take care of an Orchid plant?

I just recieved a beautiful one at a Christmas party as a prize.
How do I care for them and any tips?
Orchids are a very fragile plant. It took me a year to master the care of one. Water it once a week, but you have to make sure, absolutely, that all the water is out of the pot. Too much water can drown the roots and kill the plant, never let water sit in the pot. The easiest way to ensure this is to re-pot it in a pot that has drainage, holes in the bottom. I feed with each watering. Get a special orchid potting mix, usually found at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I find that this works well. After all the petals have fallen off, trim the branch at the location of the first bloom. Orchids have a dormant period. DO NOT think that your plant has died. During this time, care for it as you would if it had blooms. As long as the leaves are green and healthy, your plant is alive. If you find that the leaves are dying, but the blooms are gorgeous, let up a bit on the watering. Re-pot in a bigger pot every two years. Good luck and enjoy your plant!
