What should I do to take care of orchids?

Posted by admin

I just received a strawberry cupcake orchid which is a hybrid from Europe. It is planted in a small decorative pot and there is green stuff surrounding it. The information says "if it is planted in New Zealand Moss" so I am guessing the green stuff is New Zealand moss. What should I do to take care of this? Will I need to buy fertilizer? I live in Ohio if that helps with watering instructions

Oh, OK, its a miltonia/odontoglossum hybrid. It should be grown more like a Miltonia. Here’s a culture sheet. Never liked the moss, it’s mostly decorative, but you can leave it on. Yes you need to pick up a small batch of orchid fertilizer, a balanced one like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20. Use it as we orchid growers say "weekly, weakly", once a week at half the strength or less as given in the instructions. Don’t put these guys in a hot sunny window, it can burn them. They like fairly bright light, some that casts a shadow, but not direct light. Keep them moist but not soggy. This one should be OK in temps from 50 to 80 F. Keep it a bit cooler and drier in the winter to promote new growth and flowering in the spring.

Dendrobium Orchids-How to care properly?

Posted by admin

This guy who does the landscapin at my job brought 2 to the workplace. They were lookin ill so I did some research. I learned to wait til they dry out before waterin them again, and gentle mists are appreciated. So far, I’ve rejouvenated them, and new buds are about to bloom.

But how can I tell if it’s dead or just dormant?

" With the change of the day-length and cooler night temperatures of the coming winter, The nobile Dendrobiums and their hybrids begin to make their transition preparing for their winter nap. Their leaves turn yellow and fall off, not needing them for the next few months. By the time winter arrives they will be in a complete dormant condition. From November to February keep the plants dry. A light spraying is permissible if the canes are very shriveled but should not be necessary. Provide lots of light and good air circulation. By spring the plants will look very neglected with shriveled pseudobulbs and no leaves and if you did not know better you would think they were dead and ready for the trash heap."

whats the easiest way to take care of orchids?

Posted by admin

Here is some important basic care for orchids.

Do not let water stagnate in between their leaves, as it promotes bacterial rot that may kill plants like Phalaenopsis.

Do not let plants sit in water, as their roots will rot and plants will die.

Do not water them too often. Most orchid plants need watering once a week, some every 10 days or so. When placed in decorative containers (baskets, china,…) they take longer to dry out, so stretch your watering interval by a few days .

Water your plants properly (see watering instructions).

Do not expose them to drafts, however faint, of forced air heat or air conditioners. Such drafts, however faint, will dry buds and flowers in no time.

Do not place them next to or on top of heat sources (radiators, refrigerators,…) as these heat sources continuously dry the air around them and this will dessicate your plants.

Do not expose them to direct sun in the middle of the day. Leaves will burn & flowers will wilt.

Maintain reasonable temperatures: day time temperatures from 65 F to 85 F and night time temperatures from 50 F to 65 F will keep your blooms fresh for the longest time.

If your air is dry, mist leaves and buds (but not open flowers) once or twice per day.
