My orchids are getting white stains, what to do?

Posted by admin

My orchids collection is vast. they used to have lots of flowers. When the rains came, there were very few flowers, and those that came out lived only shortly. Now, I see some white spots on the leaves, and even the blooms dry and the flowering is aborted. It has been sunny, and I expected the blooms!
My orchids are out in the sun. The white spots look like scales. No, they have not been over-watered because I have not changed the routine.

Your description is a little vague. White spots on the leaves sounds like scale. Sunburn can start out as white areas on leaves. Are your plants in your home or a greenhouse? Have you changed when you water, how much you water or your fertilizer? If you could post some pictures it will be easier to make a diagnosis.

I am new to orchid growing…How do I know if the plant has a new root (growing upward) or if it is a spike?

Posted by admin

My moth orchid is growing something that is going up. Is it a root or a spike for flowering?

A flower spike has a slightly flattened end, with a dent in it- the end almost looks like a little mitten. The spike also comes out below the 5th leaf from the top, unless the orchid has lost leaves above that point for some reason. Roots are round, with an evenly tapered tip- and yeah, sometimes they head up instead of down…

What should I do to take care of orchids?

I just received a strawberry cupcake orchid which is a hybrid from Europe. It is planted in a small decorative pot and there is green stuff surrounding it. The information says "if it is planted in New Zealand Moss" so I am guessing the green stuff is New Zealand moss. What should I do to take care of this? Will I need to buy fertilizer? I live in Ohio if that helps with watering instructions

Oh, OK, its a miltonia/odontoglossum hybrid. It should be grown more like a Miltonia. Here’s a culture sheet. Never liked the moss, it’s mostly decorative, but you can leave it on. Yes you need to pick up a small batch of orchid fertilizer, a balanced one like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20. Use it as we orchid growers say "weekly, weakly", once a week at half the strength or less as given in the instructions. Don’t put these guys in a hot sunny window, it can burn them. They like fairly bright light, some that casts a shadow, but not direct light. Keep them moist but not soggy. This one should be OK in temps from 50 to 80 F. Keep it a bit cooler and drier in the winter to promote new growth and flowering in the spring.

What are the best ways to care for an orchid?

Posted by admin

Particularly the phalaenopsis and dendrobium species?

Also, what are the most effective orchid fertilizers?

Do not water every day!
Give it a little water soluble fertilizer in the water.
Just don’t water it a lot.
