Posted by admin

I was gurage saling this weekend and a lady had a lot of plants. I have walking iris plants and these look very simular but the flower is diffrent they look like a orchid.. I ask if they were iris and she said no walking orchids.. I thought cool. and got 3 of them ..but forgot to ask about care… now I can not rember where she was…

I couldn’t find anything specifically on the walking orchid. I think you might have the name wrong. This was the closest thing I found:

How do i look after a Jewel Orchid?

Posted by admin

My boyfriend bought me a Jewel Orchid as a gift and i have never looked after plants apart from Cactus, which in all fairness don’t need looking after.

does anyone have any tips for looking after this type of orchid or orchid in general?

I.E… how do i water them, how many times a day, best place to keep them etc.

Thanks in advance

Place your "Jewel Orchid" in bright filtered light. Avoid placing your plant in an area with cold drafts or to near a cold window. Your "Jewel Orchid" should produce 3 to 5 flower spikes once a year between November and January. Check for watering weekly allowing the surface of the soil to dry. Feed bi-monthly with Orchid Food. Stem cuttings can be rooted in a container of water or vermiculite.

How do I get rid of bull ants in my hanging orchids?

Posted by admin

Ok, I thought hanging them out on my fence was better than having them inside where my cats were eating them. To no surprise they recovered nicely. Till one day I went out to water them and swarms of huge ants came crawling out. Help!! Does anyone know how I can get rid of them without hurting my orchids?

Water them deeply or soak in a bucket every day for a week. Ants will consider this a "hostile" environment and move on!!

Good Luck!!

How do I care for a phalaenopsis orchid?

Posted by admin

I just recently bought this orchid and looking for some general care tips! Thanks :)

As mentioned, they can be the easiest Orchid to take care of, giving months of blooms, and can last for years- my oldest is 10 years, and looks great.
General care tips – dont overwater or let them sit in water for long. Theyre best watered with fresh rain water, not tap water. I immerse my pot in water for 10 mins or so, then let excess water drain out.
They benefit from good humidity levels, which you can create by standing on pebbles with some water – just dont let the pot touch the water. The water will evaporate around your plant, and is more effective than misting, as its continuous, not temporary.
They generally prefer indirect light, though long days of good light will encourage them to re-flower well.
Avoid drafts, as this can shock them, move them to avoid this.
Feed them with a special orchid feed, available from nurseries, or online. This contains the special micro-nutrients that orchids need.
Their flower spikes can re-shoot, so dont cut off until theyve died back, as you may get a couple more months of flowers from sprouts lower down on the spike.
Theyre generally trouble free, if you ensure that you dont overwater or chill them. Re-pot every 2 or 3 years, as they fill their pots- use a special orchid potting mix, which is usually small bark pieces, resembling their natural habitat, as they grow on trees.
The roots of this orchid can also photosynthesise, so leave any roots that are above soil alone, as theyll collect some moisture from the air, and also help your plant to grow more.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

How do I care for Phalaenopsis orchids.?

Posted by admin

I have been gifted with a lovely white Phalaenopsis for my desk. It has 3 bulbs which haven’t opened yet. I am known as the "orchid slayer" and have put 3 previous specimins out of their misery. I need help on, where to place it, how often to water it and what to expect when all the flowers fall off and i’m left with a stem.

Thanks a lot!

HI, I have thirty two orchid plants, and haven’t lost one yet. I really don’t do to much to them except water them and put them in new pots when my husband knocks them off the windowsill. First you need to give then humidity,so put a shallow container of water, with some pebbles in it ,under the pot(don’t let it set in the water). I water once a week by putting them in the sink an filling the water up to the rim of the flowerpot. Let them stay in there for fifteen minutes. I also feed them with Orchid food, but I dilute it,say 1/3 of what your actually supposed to use. That way I just water with it every time I water instead of trying to remember how many weeks goes by until I feed them again. Their Happy,I guess they are, they keep blooming. Oh, when the flowers fall off ,your supposed to cut the stalk just above where the first flower bloomed. Sometimes it grows more flowers from the same stalk, and water up to three times a week in the summer if it gets real hot outside. I keep mine in a east facing window. Bye
